Simena (Kaleköy): A Village of Rock Tombs and Silence
Simena is one of the most important settlements of ancient Lycia. Today, this small village, known as Kaleköy, is a peaceful town that can only be reached by sea and is not accessible by motorized vehicles. It offers a fascinating view with its stone houses, narrow streets decorated with bougainvillea and Simena Castle built on the top of the hill.
When viewed from the top of the castle, the historical ruins in the middle of the turquoise sea dazzle the eye. Although the ancient theater in the castle consists of only a few steps, it draws attention as one of the smallest theaters in the world.
The Lycian rock tombs you come across while walking in the village bring the past and the present together. The history echoing in silence turns Simena into a living open-air museum.
Kekova: The Sunken City and History Beneath the Waves
Located on the opposite shore of Simena, Kekova Island hides its real magic under the water. The Sunken City, which was partially submerged under the sea as a result of an earthquake in the 2nd century A.D., is now a protected area that can only be visited by boat tours.
Thanks to the tours made by transparent boats, you can see the ruins of ancient buildings, harbor ruins and stone stairs under the water. Especially at noon when the sun's rays fall perpendicular to the water, the sunken city seems to rise from the water.
The area around Kekova is also a great destination for swimming, canoeing and diving. With crystal clear waters, bays full of colorful fish and a peaceful atmosphere, this place is a wonder of nature.
