Silent witnesses of Kaunos: the timeless stones of the ancient city

When you look at the majestic royal tombs carved into the rocks on your journey through the peaceful waters of Dalyan, time stands still for a moment. It's as if someone from centuries past is winking at you. These tombs are not just stones; they are silent witnesses of the past, of love, of war and of a sad fate. Here is the protagonist of this mysterious story: Kaunos.

According to legend, Kaunos is the son of Miletos, the king of Caria. Miletos has twin children: Kaunos and his sister Byblis. Over time, however, Byblis begins to feel a forbidden love for her brother Kaunos. She tells Kaunos about her feelings in a letter. This letter turns Kaunos' world upside down. He gives up his family, his people, everything and flees far away. He settles in this area, builds a new life for himself and gives the town his name: Kaunos: Kaunos.

Today, the town on the opposite shore of Dalyan, shaped by this painful love story, continues to defy time. With its ancient theater, the ruins of the agora and the temples, Kaunos is not only an archaeological site, but also the center of an emotional connection with the past.

The rock tombs are like the most magnificent pages of this history. Each of them is worthy of the kings and worthy of the gods.
